My Favorite Brushes & Combs for Curly Hair

My Favorite Brushes & Combs for Curly Hair (and How I Use Them)

Hi Keriting friends! 🌸 Today I want to share all the brushes and combs I own, and how I use each one to get my curls looking their best. Whether you’re detangling, styling, or fluffing for volume, having the right tool makes a world of difference.

Detangling Brush (sometimes called a Flexi Brush)

This is my go-to brush for detangling my hair when it’s dry with a little oil, or even to help distribute conditioner in the shower. It’s super gentle on curls, so it helps prevent breakage.
I also use it before styling to smooth my hair out a bit without disrupting my natural curl pattern.
One of the best things about this brush? It’s really affordable, so it’s great for anyone just starting their curly hair journey.

💡 Tip: Always start detangling from the ends and work your way up to the roots to avoid tugging and breakage.

Behairful Brush

This brush is my favorite for styling. It’s amazing for creating big, juicy clumps and defined ringlets that last all day. If you love a “clumped curl” look, this brush is a winner.
💔 The only downside is that it can be a bit rough on the scalp, especially if you have a sensitive scalp, and it’s on the pricier side.

💡 Tip: Use it on damp hair with some styling product for the best curl definition.

Denman Brush D4 (9 rows, with some rows removed)

This brush is also great for styling. I modified mine by removing a few rows to help form bigger curl clumps.
💔 Unlike the Behairful Brush, this one has less tension and grip, so I don’t reach for it as often. It’s perfect if you like a looser, softer curl pattern, but it can be trickier if you want very defined clumps.

💡 Tip: Try using this brush for smoothing curls rather than forming them if you want a softer look.

Needle Comb

If you struggle with sectioning your hair like I do (yes, guilty! 🤣), this comb is a lifesaver. It helps separate hair neatly so you can style each section more effectively.
Another bonus: it’s affordable and easy to find.

💡 Tip: Use it to create clean parts or lift roots for extra volume before scrunching out the crunch.

Wide Tooth Comb

I used to use this for detangling in the shower, but now that I mostly detangle my hair dry with oil, I don’t use it as much.
💡 Some curly-haired people do like to detangle with this comb while the hair is dry, but it’s more of a “gentle” option compared to a detangling brush.

Hair Pick

This tool is essential for fluffing and adding volume after scrunching out the crunch. I use it at the roots to lift my curls without disrupting the curl pattern.

💡 Tip: Pick from underneath rather than the top to keep your curls defined while creating a full, voluminous look.
